From Nanny-Care to Preschool
Transitioning from nanny care to preschool is a big milestone. Your child is moving from a 1:1 environment to group care, and your nanny is adjusting too. With the right prep, the transition can be smooth and supportive for everyone involved.
Start by talking about the change early and often. Your nanny can read preschool-themed books with your child and practice skills like raising hands, using cubbies, or washing hands after snacks. They can also help shift daily routines to better mirror the preschool day—snack times, group play, and nap schedules.
Visit the new school together if possible. If your nanny will help with drop-off during the first week, prep them on how long to stay, how to say goodbye, and how to support emotional upsets.
Reassure your child that their nanny isn’t “going away”—just playing a different role now. And support your nanny, too. They may feel a mix of pride and sadness as their role shifts. Acknowledge their impact and offer them ways to stay involved, whether that’s helping with pickup, after-school care, or weekend babysitting.
Transitions are easier when everyone feels informed, valued, and part of the process. With teamwork, your child can start school with confidence—and your nanny can step into this next chapter with support.
